My Kihini Rules

Print and colour in this karakia with your tamariki, hang up in your dining room and practice before meal times.

Get ready for a Pāti Pihapiha! We'll be making our own pokepoke (dough) and adding our own kai (toppings) and having fun (and making a mess) in reo Māori.

We will be decorating cupcakes for My Kihini Rules! Print and colour in your own cupcake, learn different decorating words and phrases!

Some helpful phrases! On Reo 2 Go day our older rangatahi will be me making a mystery food item!  In the meantime, here are some phrases you can learn before the competition to help stay in reo Māori! Kia kaha!

Learn some phrases around tikanga (safety in the kitchen) and whanonga (behaviour). Print and colour in this poster of phrases with your tamariki. You can learn together. Once it’s all coloured in, hang it up in your dining room or kitchen to remind the whānau about the tikanga around kai and in the kīhini. You can use the second poster to add your own tikanga in reo Māori.

Rā Papakēmu

Our whakaaro here at Reo 2 Go is that you should be able to play any game in reo Māori, from the classics to newer games! Have a go at 'māori-fying' your own boardgames at home. Sit down and think about the phrases and vocab (in reo Māori)  you would need to play the game. Write them down and use them while playing. We took some popular games and looked up some vocab and phrases relevant to the game. Download and print them off here then plan a games night with the whānau! Kia Kaha!

We've come up with kupu and phrases for the different papakēmu in our whare! You can do the same! We've uploaded the Reo 2 GO sheets we created for our Rā Papakēmu here but all you really need is a dictionary and a sharpie pen (and maybe some twink!) Haerenga ki te motu o Matiu / Somes

Matiu Somes

Have fun with tamariki this week and learn some reo together! Learn names for the different wildlife we might see on the motu! Click on the title to download and print , then colour to your hearts content!

Whānau fun with this kēmu! Who can reach the Whare Rama first! You'll need a mataono (dice) and some perepere (counters) but that's about it. Great for tamariki of all ages as it has different levels. The answers to some of the pātai can be found in some of the other Reo-sources! Click on the title to download and print off the instructions, the playing board and playing cards (A3 size is preferable but A4 will work fine)

Handy kōrero to know for the kēmu:

Whiua te mataono - Throw the dice!

Mā wai e timata? - Who will start

Kei a koe te wā - It's your turn!

Haere kia 2 ngā neke - Move forward 2 spaces!

E hoki kia 3 ngā neke - Go back 3 spaces!

Tīnihanga! - Cheat!

Ka rawe tō mahi e te tau! - Awesome work darling!

Click on the title to download and print our Reo 2 Go sheets and work through them this week! We've purposefully left the translations out to give you an opportunity to try and translate on your own. Take some time to work on the sheets as opposed to just printing them off and bringing them on the day. That won't work!

Reo 2 Go activities are about speaking māori 'in the moment'. Once the activity starts, time goes by so quickly, you'll hear kupu, phrases and reo you've never heard before as people just 'get on' with the day, people with varying levels of reo will be trying to speak to you, you will want to speak to others and if you're busy trying to refer to your sheets, you'll become frustrated and revert back to reo Pākeha! Aue!

Find your way around the motu in reo Māori. Kaua e ngaro! Don't get lost!

Click on the title to download and print out the pages. Make this your bedtime story with the tamariki for the week!
